Short Choke
Submission · Back Control
A choke that goes around the chin instead of under it: the blade of your forearm cuts into the side of his neck below the ear. From back control, when he tucks the chin and clamps both hands on your arm against the rear naked choke. Do not dig under the chin: bring your choking hand to your own shoulder or chest, set the forearm across the side of the neck, not the jaw, and lock your hands palm to palm right next to his neck, wedging the supporting forearm behind his shoulder between your chest and his back. Keep both hooks so he cannot turn in, then pull the wrist to your chest and turn your chest away from the choking arm. On the jaw it is only a painful crank. If he slides down, take mount. Go slow.
How to do it
- When their chin is tucked and their hands clamp on your arm, do not fight to get under the chin. Bring your choking hand to your own shoulder or chest instead.
- Put the blade of the forearm across the side of their neck, below the ear, not on the jaw.
- Lock your hands palm to palm right next to their neck and shove your supporting forearm down behind their shoulder, between your chest and their back, for extra power.
- Keep both hooks in and your chest on their back, so they cannot turn toward you while you finish.
- Pull the wrist toward your chest and turn your chest away from the choking arm. The forearm cuts into the side of the neck and closes it.
Key details
- Works when the chin blocks the rear naked choke. It goes around the chin instead of under it.
- Aim the forearm at the side of the neck, not the jaw. On the jaw it is only a painful crank.
- Keep the hooks so they cannot turn. If they turn in, the forearm comes off the neck.
- Drive your supporting elbow down behind their shoulder for extra power, not just pulling with the choking arm. The elbow turns the grip into a lever.
Common mistakes
- Pulling the jaw up. — It is a painful crank, not a choke. — Aim the forearm at the side of the neck, not under the jaw.
- Using it as the first choice. — It is weaker than a clean rear naked choke, so it tires you for less. — Use it only when the chin is tucked and the rear naked choke will not go in.
- Losing the hooks. — Without hooks they turn in and escape while you choke. — Keep the hooks in while you choke, so they cannot turn.
- Locking the grip far out from the neck. — The forearm has nothing to cut into, and pulling only turns his head. — Keep the locked hands right next to his neck, then pull the choking elbow back behind his shoulder while your shoulder pushes forward.
If they defend
- They hold your arm with both hands. → Switch sides and choke with the other arm.
How to drill it
RNC to short choke switch, 8 reps; then the partner tucks the chin at random.
Safety
