Bulldog Choke

Submission · Back Control

A side headlock choke: your forearm across his throat and your chest driving down close the neck between them. It is the backup when he slides his shoulders down to the mat to escape back control and his head ends up under your arm at the side. Do not chase the back; take the head: wrap it with the forearm across the throat under the chin, not on the jaw, and lock your hands palm to palm. Keep your ribs in front of his shoulder so it cannot come through, switch your hips and sit through as he turtles so your weight stays on him, then flex the arm up while driving the chest down. Squeeze straight; any twist of the neck turns it into a crank. If he tucks the chin, return to back control; if he turns into you, take mount.

How to do it

  1. As they slide off the back, their head ends up under your arm at the side. Do not chase the back; take the head.
  2. Wrap the head in a side headlock, the forearm across the throat under the chin, not on the jaw.
  3. Lock your hands palm to palm, so the arm around the neck cannot open.
  4. Get your ribs in front of their shoulder so it cannot come through, then switch your hips and sit through, as for a clock choke, so your weight stays on them and they cannot roll away.
  5. Pull the choke up and drive the chest down, slowly, until the tap. Squeeze the throat straight; do not twist the neck.

Key details

  • Forearm on the throat, not the jaw. On the jaw it only hurts; on the throat it chokes.
  • Chest down, arm up. The opposite directions close the neck between your arm and your chest.
  • A backup when they escape the back. It catches the head that is left behind as their body slides off.
  • It works when he escapes to your underhook side: take your bottom arm out from under his armpit first, then slide the top hand under his chin. The bite need not be deep yet; it tightens as he turtles.

Common mistakes

  • Squeezing the jaw. — It hurts but does not choke. — Slide the forearm under the chin.
  • Standing up to pull. — They roll away from you and escape the choke. — Stay low with the chest on them.
  • Cranking the neck. — A twist turns the choke into a neck crank that injures. — Squeeze the throat, do not twist.

How to drill it

Partner slides off, you catch the head, 6 slow reps each side.

Safety

Squeeze slowly and release at the tap. Any twist of the neck makes it a crank: do not twist.
